In January 2006 Race and Rhythm created a cross art form collage of dance theatre called "Frida". The production is inspired by the life and work of Mexican artist Frida Kahlo and celebrates a fusion of Spanish, Mexican, Argentinean, North American and British cultures.
The work was shown at The Place Theatre. The piece was performed at Frida Kahlo Theater in LA, California as part of the celebrations of the Centenary of Frida Kahlo's Birth that have been taking place since July 2007 around the world.
The work mixes original recorded music by Carlos Otero with live traditional latin songs sang by Luz Elena Caicedo and accompanied by Elena Jauregui's Violin. These two artist and three more female performers represent the different passages of Kahlo's life. Denzil Barnes embodies her partner, Diego Rivera. Colourful costumes and projections based on Kahlo's paintings gave the piece a strong Mexican flavour.
The distinctive contemporary dance vocabulary inspired by Spanish, Argentinean Tango and Hip Hop styles portray a collage of the life and work of the painter. Together with the use of digital projections, original music, set and costume design Frida combines to tell the artist's story in a powerful and memorable performance.
"Frida" is available for touring as a 25minute piece or a 60 minutes full production.
